Umm als Quwain

The emirate is located in the north of the UAE on the Persian Gulf. In 2005, it had about 50,000 inhabitants, making it the emirate with the smallest population in the UAE. Traditionally, the emirate lived from fishing, boat building (dhows) and the date culture practised in the Falaj al-Muʿalla oasis. The bay of Chaur al-Badya offers the best sailing opportunities in the UAE. The island of as-Siniyya, declared a nature reserve and located about one kilometre off Umm al-Qaiwain City, is home to many rare animal species and is an important breeding ground for turtles.

In the north of the emirate, on a peninsula off the bay of Chaur al-Badya, lies the capital of the same name, Umm al-Qaiwain. There are seven forts in the city, one of which has been renovated and now houses a museum. To the east of the city and in the Chaur al-Badya are several mangrove-covered islands, the largest of which is the island of as-Siniyya. About 40 km southeast of the capital is Falaj al-Muʿalla, the agricultural centre of the emirate.

In Local Dialects Umm Al Quwain meaning is stated as “the Place of Two Cavities“. Thus reflecting the ‘relief of the place‘. Al Budoor says Umm Al Quwain meaning refers to the two powers of economy and agriculture possessed by the Emirate. They possessed the land and the sea. Therefore it was called “the mother of two strengths”.

Umm Al Quwain Free Trade Zone (UAQ FTZ), is the latest Freezone in UAE, is 30 minutes drive from Dubai Airport. With a sound, transparent and modern legal framework, open investment climate as well as easy access to trading partners in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, it´s a good place to do business. For example, the production facility of GulfCraft, the leading superyacht manufacturer in the Middle East, is located in Umm Al Quwain. Over the years, a huge network of maritime suppliers has grown there that we can rely on.
